In celebration of the Joe Declassified / Joe Customs Ultimate Custom Contest, Joe Declassified is revealing a handful of images
that represent some lost GI JOE history from 1987 and 1988.

So by all means use these images for inspiration for your custom contest entries!!!!!
The first images are of sculpts, the images following are of concept art.
So after you see the heads, scroll down to see the rest of the art.

The following images are of 2up head sculpts for two unproduced GI JOE characters. (4ups were larger sculpts used for presentation purposes). These were done in 1987 so it is to be assumed they would have been released in 1988 if not later. This is as far as they got in the pre-production process. Due to the uniqueness of their sculpt, being extremely different and experimental in approach and execution... the concern at the time was that they would not translate well at 3 3/4 inches and that more than likely they would not be compatible with the very uniformed pantograph process in the first place. (For more on the pantograph process, please follow this link: http://joeintel.com/general_page_desc.php?left_search=&cat=&countries_id=MzY5MzY5&cat_id=MzY5OTgzNjk=&cat_content_id=MzY5NzEzNjk=&desc=desc). Another concern, and most likely a huge deciding factor, was that these characters were obviously more ethnic in appearance than not. At the time Hasbro did not want villains from other countries where their ethnicity, nationality, etc were obvious in the details of their sculpt etc. Where as Storm Shadow gets away with a mask, the other villains get away with just having accents. That sort of thing.

There is a Polaroid to accompany one of the characters. The original art was destroyed in a flood at Hasbro many, many years ago. The sculpts survived and a Polaroid taken of one piece of art survived. Neither of these characters were Cobra specifically. They were mercenaries.

Ra-Bif (pronounced: "Raw Beef")

T'Sun "The Spider Handler"
(Ideally he was to spiders what Croc-Master is to crocs etc. Sneak into enemy tents and unleash his spiders).

The following images are scans of slides. The original art pieces were destroyed in the same flood that claimed the art above.
Fortunately, the art was saved onto slides and one polaroid. The slides were scanned by notpicard so that we could put them up here.
The slides are all dated 1988.

These characters and concepts pictured below are of an "environmental response team."

The first image is all the "text" that exists in regards to these concepts. The assumption is that one character is named "Hot Foot?" (presumably in the first full image with the foot pads???). The other terms that appear are "Lava Squadron" (sub-team?) and "U.S.L.F.P." (United States Lava? F? Patrol?).
The word "patrol" appears as well.

The retired Hasbro employee that had preserved these slides was only able to give us the names of "The Tornado Twins" in regards to one of the images and "Vulcan" who it is assumed is the one with the "trident" in the double image with "Hot Foot." Other than that, you know as much as we do now. Again, the original and actual art for these was destroyed so what we were able to salvage from the slides is all there is. A very special thank you to notpicard for scanning these slides and Polaroids. This is as far as these characters got in the pre-production process.

Possibly "Hot Foot" and "Vulcan" ???
